I just owned a little place in a mall. We sold Atlanta stuff. You know, shirts that say “I love Atlanta” or “Kiss me, I’m Georgian” and then on the back say “U.S.A. of course.” Not too many people really understood that one but some reason they still sold well. And we did well enough for ourselves. We survived as a business for nearly seven years. That meant, yes, we were making money.

But then we hit a little bump in the road. The neighborhood just started going a little downhill. Not much but some of the hotels weren’t booking all the rooms they used to. I didn’t know how to make it better. I mean our business never really relied on marketing. We were always kind of a spinoff of the hotel industry.

And a little bump in the road eventually turns into a pothole. It doesn’t take long for these things to add up. Less than a year later we were in deep debt. My personal credit was ruined. What more could I have done. Two cars in front of me were going into a head on collision it looked like. I realized that if I didn’t do something quick I would be part of it too. So I swerved onto the wrong side of the road and avoided the accident. The two cars avoided the accident too. No one actually got hurt. However, right after the light a cop decided to pull me over. I got a ticket!

I really couldn’t believe it. You have no idea how upset I am over this. I try to avoid an accident and because I actually did avoid it I get a ticket. Then I told the judge all this in court and all he said was “I wasn’t there but this officer says that you are accountable. It only requires a preponderance of evidence. I’ll have to fine you.”

I’m a news anchor at channel 11 in Atlanta.  I work the 10 o’clock evening news which calls for some crazy work hours.  I have to be to work at six and am in meetings after the 10 o’clock news airs for 2 to 3 hours afterwards.  I love my job but don’t like leaving work that late at night.  I always feel very uneasy walking into the parking garage in the middle of the night.  Nothing had ever happened until last Tuesday.  I unlocked my car and sat down in the seat.  When I went to put my key in the ignition, someone forcefully put their hand over my mouth and told me not to scream.  He was also holding a knife to my neck.  I couldn’t have screamed if I wanted to because I was in shock.  It felt like I was in an episode of CSI.  He forced me into the passenger seat and sped out of the parking lot.  I think he was on drugs or crazy because nothing he said ever made any sense.  After two hours of driving around aimlessly, he threw me out of the car.  I was in pain from the fall to the pavement but so happy that he didn’t do worse to me.  I found out later that he was in a cocaine frenzy.  He totaled my brand new Mercedes and I was left taking cabs to work.  The insurance company would only pay me list price for the car.  I loved that car so much but I didn’t have the extra money to replace it.
